How To Use Virtual Private Network (VPN) With Wireless Orbi Setup Using A Windows Client?

In order to use VPN service through a windows computer, users must ensure they have first downloaded and installed the VPN software on all the computers being used to offer Virtual Private Network connectivity to Orbi router. After the VPN software is installed on required computers, users may refer to the following procedure for enabling the VPN service.
Steps for turning ON the VPN services:
  1. Open an updated web browser on mobile or computer connected to the Orbi router’s Wi-Fi network.
  2. Type www.orbilogin.com in the blank space provided for URL. After typing the URL hit the “Go” button or press and release the enter key for once.
  3. An orbi login page will open up. So, type in the user ID and password corresponding to your orbi. The default user ID of orbi remains as “admin” and the password remains to be “password.” Both the user ID and password should be entered in lowercase format only.
  4. After the Orbi account opens up, click on the option for “Advanced.”
  5. Within “Advanced” locate the option for “Advanced Setup” and click on it.
  6. Under “Advanced Setup” click on the options labeled as “VPN Services.”
  7. The VPN Service page will open up.
  8. Click on the check box labeled as “Enable VPN Service.”
  9. Click on the “Apply” button.
  10. Find the button labeled as “For Windows” and click on it to download the setup file of Open VPN.
  11. Browse the URL https://openvpn.net/index.php/download/community-downloads.html for downloading a copy of Open VPN client utility.
  12. Users will be directed to Windows installer side of that page. So, locate the link for “Open VPN-install-xxx-exe” installation file and double click on it.
  13. Click on the option for downloading and configuring Open VPN software files on the computer.
  14. Tap once on the file named as “Open VPN-install-xxx-exe.”
  15. Find the button labeled as “Next” and click on it to proceed.
  16. A prompt window will open up on the screen that will contain the license agreement. So, read the license agreement carefully and then click on the option for “I Agree” to verify that a user has accepted all the stated terms and conditions.
  17. Click inside the check boxes to check-in them.
  18. Click once on the “Next” button available near checked-in boxes.
  19. Choose any of the folders as a destination folder for saving the installation software files. So, locate the “Browse” button and go to the folder you wish to keep as the destination folder.
  20. A security window pop will show up will show up on the screen.
  21. Click on the button for “Install.”
  22. Soon after the “Install” button is clicked, an installation progress message will start showing up on the screen.
  23. After the installation is completed, users will get directed to final installation window. The final installation window will contain a “Finish” button. So, click on that button for “Finish.”
  24. The downloaded configuration files might be available in a zipped format. So, users are requested to kindly unzip the required configuration files and then copy or move those to the folder with VPN client installed on it. Ideally, in case of 64-bit windows operating system the default installation folder path for VPN client remains as: C:\Programfiles\OpenVPN\config\.
  25. In case of windows client device, users should change the name of VPN interface as NETGEAR-VPN. Following are the set of steps that a user must follow to change the name of VPN interface.
  • Visit the networks page from your computer. In case of computer with windows 10, users may first go to “Control Panel.” A list of control panel options will show up on the screen. There, click on the option for “Network and Sharing Center.” Under Network and Sharing Center options click on the “Change adapter settings” menu.
  • Within the list of local area connections, locate a local area connection linked to the device name TAP-Windows Adapter.
  • Click on the name of local area connection for getting it changed to “NETGEAR-VPN.” If the name of VPN interface will not be changed, then the failure of VPN tunnel connection can be experienced. So, to avoid this connection failure, users must change the name of VPN interface.
After a user has gone through all of these steps, the VPN service will be enabled with Orbi Wi-Fi using a windows client. All the steps are designed to be simple and easy to understand.
