Here’s the procedure to manually update the firmware version of an Orbi in case the auto update fails.

Ideally, users need to follow a three step process for manually updating the firmware version of their orbi router as well its satellite. This three step process is as follows:

1. Download and save the copy of firmware update file for an orbi router and its satellite as well.
2. Updating the firmware version of an orbi satellite.
3. Updating the firmware version of an orbi router.

This three step firmware update process is further described as follows:

1. Steps for Downloading and saving the copy of firmware update file for an orbi router and its satellite:

• Browse “Netgear download center” to download and save the firmware update file for an orbi satellite. Make sure the downloaded firmware update file is saved to the desktop location of your computer. If the downloaded file is in zipped format, then try to unzip that firmware file.
• Open the web browser on any of the computers which is connected to an orbi router through a hard wired connection. Ensure the computer and orbi are connected securely with the help of an Ethernet cable. Users should not use a wirelessly connecting computer for uploading a firmware update file.
• Type http://orbilogin.com in the URL field and press down the enter key for once.
• An orbi login page will open up. There submit the user ID and password for logging in to your account. In case the orbi router is all new, then it might be set to its default settings and you can use the default user ID and password for logging in to the orbi account. The default sign in ID is “admin” and the default password remains blank. If any modifications have been made to the router’s default settings, then users will have to type in the password that was entered at the time of initial setup. • Once a user is logged in to an orbi account, find the “Advanced” settings menu and click on it.
• Under “Advanced” settings, click on “Administration.”
• Within “Administration” settings click on the option labeled as “Firmware Update.”
• Click on the option for “Manual Update.”
• The firmware update page will open up. There first update the firmware of your orbi satellite and then move to your orbi router.

2. Steps for updating the firmware of an Orbi satellite:

• Select the model of your satellite by clicking inside the check box available in front of the model name of your Orbi satellite.
• Click once on the button labeled as “Update.”
• The firmware update window for an Orbi satellite will open up.  
• In case the browser prompts you to submit the account sign in credentials, then type in the admin user ID and password for accessing the orbi account.
• After submitting the credentials, locate the “Browse” button and select the firmware update files saved to the desktop location. Usually the firmware update file might be saved with “.img” or “.chk” files extension.
• After selecting the file click on button for “Upload.” It might take a couple of minutes to upload the firmware update file.
• After the satellite firmware update completes, click on the “Status” button to confirm if the firmware update was successful.

3. Steps for updating the firmware version of an orbi router:

• Type http://orbilogin.com as the URL in any of the web browsers on your computer.
• You will be directed to the orbi setup page.
• Return back to the firmware update page as you did while updating the firmware of orbi satellite.
• Click on “Advanced” settings.
• Locate the “Administration” settings menu and click on it.
• Under “Administration” settings, click on “Firmware update” tab.
• Locate the button for “Manual update” and click on it.
• You will be directed to firmware update page. There click on “Browse” button to locate the firmware update file that was earlier saved to the desktop location of your computer. The file might be saved with “.img” extension.
•  After locating the file, click on the button for “Upload.”
• The firmware update file will get uploaded within few couple of minutes.
• In case you receive a prompt, then click on the option for “Yes” to proceed.
• After the orbi router’s firmware update has been completed, you may click on the firmware version available at the top right side for confirming the status of firmware update.
